HOMING A GREYHOUND
SO, YOU ARE THINKING OF HOMING A GREYHOUND .....
WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT?
Our greyhounds needing homes are mostly young - the majority being between 3 & 6 years old. Some need homes when they are younger, perhaps because they never had a racing career; and some when they are a little older, perhaps because they themselves have suffered a loss.
In general these are gentle, affectionate, people-loving dogs, adaptable and ready to settle into a new life as a pet.
Some are super laid-back, ready for a quiet life in front of a fire and just a couple of short walks each day.
Some are more exuberant, energetic or playful - all set to be great companions for people with similar attributes.
In other words - there's a greyhound to suit you and your lifestyle!
Greyhounds certainly love to sleep; and will delightedly soak up all of the attention you can offer. They need only minimal grooming and usually travel well.
And the fact that many become excellent therapy dogs tells you much about their character and understanding of people.
With the patience and kindness of their new families they are quick to learn and adapt and settle into life as gentle, loving companions.
CAN YOU SEE A GREYHOUND IN YOUR LIFE?
As a footnote to cat lovers ...
Apologies to greyhound-loving cat owners - we are not currently able to assess greyhounds at our branch with regard to their tolerance of cats. So, in the interests of both cat and greyhound safely, we are sorry but we cannot at this time accept homing applications from households with a resident cat.
WHAT IS THE HOMING PROCESS?
Families and individuals are, of course, all different, which is why we start out on the road to homing by getting to know you and your individual circumstances.
We can then consider together with you which greyhounds would be suitable in your situation.
We work hard at this ‘match-making’ -trying to ensure the best possible outcome for both people and greyhounds.
After these initial considerations, we can then arrange an appointment at the kennels to introduce you to greyhounds likely to fit in with your lifestyle.
That is when the chemistry takes over - And is often the time when a greyhound actually does the choosing!
When you take your dog home there will be some paperwork to complete, including a homing agreement.
And the Greyhound Trust do ask for a payment of £190.
Every greyhound leaves with a new leather greyhound collar and lead and a muzzle.
We stress that the wearing of a muzzle is essential to keeping your dog safe while they settle into a whole new world full of new challenges.
As per the Greyhound Board of Great Britain Responsible Homing Policy, every greyhound homed by us is neutered before being homed. They are also microchipped and up-to-date with inoculations and parasite treatments.
But things don't end there - you can be assured of ongoing support, as much or as little as you want or need. There will always be someone to help.
